Star Decay is one of those mechanics that might seem harsh at first, but once you understand why it exists, you will realize it actually makes Buddzy way more fun and competitive. Let us talk about what Decay is, how it works, and why it is actually a good thing for everyone.
What Exactly Is Decay?
Decay is an automatic 10 percent reduction applied to your All-Time Star total. It happens at the end of every Current Orbit cycle, which means every 14 days. If your All-Time score is 500 Stars, Decay will remove 50 of them, leaving you with 450 going into the next cycle. Simple math, but the implications are huge.
When Does It Hit?
Decay triggers at the exact moment an orbit ends. The sequence goes like this: the Current Orbit wraps up, your recap screen appears, then the 10 percent Decay is applied to your All-Time total, and finally a brand new Current Orbit cycle begins from zero. This whole thing happens at 12:00 UTC every 14 days like clockwork.
Who Does It Affect?
Everyone. Every single Buddzy player gets the same 10 percent cut. It does not matter if you have 100 All-Time Stars or 10,000. The percentage is equal, and nobody gets special treatment. There is no way to avoid it, no items to protect against it, and no way to opt out. It is an inevitable part of the game.
What It Does NOT Affect
This is important. Decay only touches your All-Time leaderboard score. It does not affect your Current Orbit score because that resets to zero anyway. It does not affect your Popularity score. It does not reduce your Aura, your Streaks, or anything else. Decay is laser-focused on the All-Time board and nothing else.
Good to Know
Decay levels the playing field. If you stop playing, your All-Time score shrinks by 10 percent every two weeks. After a few months of inactivity, even a formerly dominant player will slide down the rankings. Staying active is what keeps you competitive — not just having a long head start.
The Strategic Angle
Decay creates a constant pressure to stay engaged. You need to receive enough Stars every cycle to at least replace the 10 percent you lose. If your All-Time is 1000, you need to gain at least 100 Stars in the next 14 days just to break even. Gaining more than that means you are actually growing your total.
Embracing Decay
Do not fear Decay. Embrace it as the mechanic that keeps the playing field alive. It rewards the players who show up consistently and naturally filters out those who go inactive. In a way, Decay is what makes the All-Time leaderboard meaningful because staying on top actually requires effort.
